Artist’s Statement:
A painting is a story and, as a storyteller, I have always been drawn to artists who allow their work to tell stories with a minimum of filigree - like a lone actor on a blank stage. In the theatre, they say that all you need is four planks and a passion. My figurative work, The Boxes of Despond, reflects an aesthetic borne of comic books and graphic novels that has deepened with such varied influences as Egon Schiele and Jim Steranko, Kent Williams and Otto Dix.
Visual Haiku
Each of these paintings involves a character or a group of characters in the midst of an existential struggle with an inner or outer demon. Because many of these works are on boxes, the work becomes not just a piece, but a place; a repository for bad dreams, perhaps, or an ossuary for the bones of memory. The dark territory these characters inhabit hopes to convey an emotional minimalism as spare as a Beckett landscape and as quiet as Edvard Munch.
